THE GREATEST SWINDLER

 

There were so many swindlers in the world that it is hard to name the greatest one. But Charles Ponzi, an Italian immigrant to the United States, is thought to have been one of the greatest swindlers in American history.

 

He was known as Charles Ponei, Charles P. Bianchi, Carl or Carlo. He had different aliases and many people have never heard of Ponzi. But “Ponzi scheme” is a well known term that describes fraud and also its modern version, the “make money fast” schemes that may be found in the Internet.

 

Charles Ponzi arrived in the USA in 1903 with few dollars. He quickly learned English and acclimatized in America. Over the next fourteen years, Ponzi wandered from city to city and from job to job.  He worked as a dishwasher, waiter, store clerk, and even as an Italian interpreter.  In 1917, he settled back into Boston where he took a job typing and answering foreign mail.  It was here in Boston on that fateful day in August of 1919 that Ponzi discovered the mechanism to make both him and his investors very wealthy.
